We won’t be holding the Fireworks Night this year

Because the rates of Covid 19 are very high in the Caernarfon area, in order to keep everyone safe and prevent the situation from getting worse, we will not be organising a Fireworks night this year.

An extraordinary meeting of the Town Council was held to discuss this and a unanimous vote was taken in favour of cancelling.

This is very disappointing but there was little choice in the circumstances. This is consistent with what is happening in most other places.

Caernarfon Town Council secure a grant
to create a Repair and Renovate community hub

Caernarfon Town Council has secured a grant from the Welsh Government’s Green Recovery Economy Circular Economy Fund 2020-2021 to create a community hub to repair, renovate and recycle goods in Caernarfon Town centre.

During the pandemic, community groups have come together to share resources and, in Caernarfon, the Porthi Pawb scheme has been feeding vulnerable adults, Porthi Plantos has been feeding children in need and the FoodShare scheme, in conjunction with Tesco, has been distributing free food around town. When it was realised that the aims of all these schemes matched the Government’s Circular Economy Fund, an application was submitted.

Phase one of the scheme is to find suitable and available premesis in the town, and this will also contribute towards renovating the town centre. With suitable premesis, and grant aid, the above schemes will be able to purchase fridges and freezers to store more food for local distribution, free of charge. There are also plans to recycle children’s clothes – a scheme which, at present, is distributing items free of charge from the Institute cellar. With suitable premesis, the clothes will be freely available. There will be no charge for the clothes, but any contributions will be gratefully received.

Phase two and three of the scheme will include repairing clothes, white goods and furniture alongside basic cookery training, in conjunction with the Food Bank.

On behalf of the Council, Sion Wyn Evans, Town Clerk, said, “Caernarfon Town Council is pleased to accept the Welsh Government grant to help the people of Caernarfon in many different ways. It will also contribute towards improving the environment through recycling. The Town Council is eager to use the skills and expertise of all within the Council to push the venture forwards, co-operating with others, for the benefit of the town at this difficult time for all.”

And on behalf of Porthi Pawb, Chris Summers, the scheme’s Co-ordinator, said, “Porthi Pawb, Porthi Plantos and Porthi Plantos Clothes, as well as the Foodshare scheme with Tesco, have been a spectacular success over the past nine months – and they’re going from strength to strength. We’re lucky to get an opportunity to develop a project that will be warmly embraced by our amazing community. The possibilities of a community project such as this old town of ours are endless – which proves that anything is possible when a group of positive and passionate people come together.”

Rememberance Sunday

We will not be arranging a fireworks display on November 5th

Due to the situation regarding Covid 19, the new National Lockdown, and the importance of keeping everyone safe we will not be arranging a fireworks display on November 5th.

This is of course disappointing though inevitable given the circumstances.

Caernarfon Royal Town Council Statement on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November, 2020

The Welsh Government has announced that a short, sharp firebreak will be introduced across Wales at the end of this week to help regain control of coronavirus. This means that a series of restrictive measures will be in place from 6.00 p.m., Friday 23rd October until the start of Monday 9th November 2020.
On a British level, the Royal British Legion states that Due to the COVID19 pandemic and, in light of the risks posed, the annual Remembrance Sunday March past the Cenotaph will not take place this year. They recognise that this will be deeply disappointing for all who were due to take part and it is not a step that has been taken lightly. This decision has been taken by the Government based on expert advice to protect the health and well-being of those who would have been travelling to and participating in the event.

Despite the changes, they are encouraging people to ensure that Remembrance Sunday is still marked by taking part in remote and socially distanced Remembrance activity, whether that be watching the service on television or pausing for the two minute silence at home or on their doorsteps.

Regarding the arrangements in Caernarfon, here is an update on Remembrance Sunday arrangements:

Due to the situation with Covid 19, the Remembrance Sunday event will not take place on Castle Square this year. This is very disappointing but there is not much choice. The decision has been made in consultation with the Police, Gwynedd Council and the Royal British Legion.

We will be filming a service a few days earlier, and will post that on the Town Council's Facebook page.

For those who wish to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph, Councillor Keith Jones will be sharing them at the Institute Building between 2.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 4th November, Thursday, 5th November and Friday, 6th November. Those laying a wreath are urged to do so between Wednesday and Saturday, and not to turn up on Castle Square on the Sunday.

Help local organisations to support the local community

Caernarfon Royal Town Council has allocated £7,000 to help local organisations to support the local community in the battle against the coronavirus and help the residents of the town (up to a maximum of £500 per organisation). This fund has been boosted by a further contribution of £1000 from community group the Caernarfon Lions Club.

Here is a quick guide to the groups and organisations who have so far received grants and the wonderful ways they are helping the community.

Cwrw Da

A grant to purchase two microwaves to improve the kitchen facilities for NHS staff who have to work away from their homes for reasons of infection control.

Noddfa Church

A project to help older people who feel isolated or lonely due to the lock down or self isolation. Using telephones rather than computers to provide “conference calls” and a chance for groups to socialise despite physical distancing and lack of access to video conferencing.

Cofis Curo Corona

Have received a grant, generously matched by Adra housing association to distribute food parcels to people across the town. The parcels are distributed by volunteers and aim particularly to support those who are self isolating or who have seen a significant drop in their income.

Tarian Cymru

A group of volunteers raising money to provide PPE to hospitals, care homes and the community. They have provided PPE to many locations in Caernarfon.

Tim Pobi Cofis

Have received a grant to buy raw materials and containers for distributing free desserts and cakes to raise spirits and help people across the town.

If you would like to make an application for a grant to support such work then the application forms are available here.

If you would like to offer help or receive support from any of the projects mentioned above then the staff of the town council can direct you to a suitable contact. Give us a call on 01286 672943.
